Do you have a legal issue, but cannot afford to hire an attorney? There are many ways to obtain free or low cost legal help. Some, but not all, of the services listed in this guide are reserved for people of low-income.

The local resources in this guide are organized in two ways: by topic (landlord/tenant, immigration, etc.) and by organizations that assist specialized populations (e.g. Hispanic, disabled, elderly). Click on a topic or population to view a list of organizations that provide services for that topic or population. There is also a full list of the legal service organizations which you can search.


Free Legal Services in San Francisco:

Bay Area Legal Aid offers free over-the-phone legal help with housing, public benefits, consumer, and health care issues to qualified individuals. There are now some "in-person" legal clinics, while others are still remote events. Call 800-551-5554 or visit their web page for information and remote assistance.

SF Bar Association Legal Advice and Referral Clinics (LARC): There are now three different locations: UC Law San Francisco (formerly Hastings), Bayview, and Mission.
